A determined Riddim Squad left nothing to chance in their quest to qualify for the Guyana Football Federation Premier League by producing an efficient display against host Fruta Conquerors who they defeated 4-2 when action in the Georgetown Football Association Playoffs continued on Friday evening, at the Tucville Community Centre ground.
Amos Ramsay led the Mocha based side with a second half brace which came in the 55th and 88th minutes, while Teon Jones and Sheldon Gurrick added one goal apiece in the 23rd and 87th minutes respectively.
Eon Alleyne continued his good form with a goal in the 48th minute, while Jermaine Junior‘s 90th minute strike accounted for Conquerors second goal.
Playing in the feature game of a double header, the opening period saw both teams fail to produce a proper sequence of passes early on, before Jones’ clever play when he beat the opposition’s offside trap with a superb chested take from a lobbed pass to beat the advancing goalkeeper, firing a fierce right-foot into the open goal.
That gave them a 1-0 lead at the break as both teams failed to initiate any serious attacking forays after.
Conquerors, however, managed to level the score shortly after the start of the second period when Alleyne’s shot took a deflection off a defender and wrong-footed the Riddim Squad custodian.
It came as a result of a free kick won just outside the 18-yard box following an infringement.
However, Ramsay restored the advantage for Riddim Squad when he advanced towards the Conquerors backline, reached into the penalty area, before delivering a bending shot that somehow managed to elude the grasp of the goalkeeper to end up into the back of the goal. It was a disappointing result that momentarily sunk the hearts of the Conquerors supporters.
Gurrick stretched their lead when he took full advantage of poor defending following a lobbed pass from the right flank to crash a right-footed screamer from about eight yards out that blew past the flailing attempt by the goalkeeper to give Riddim Squad a two-goal cushion with three minutes of regulation left.
Ramsay then completed his double one minute later after intercepting a pass in mid-field, before sprinting down the middle, skipping two markers in the process to fire a belter that landed into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
Junor then gained a consolation goal after a poor attempt to gather and eventually clear a cross from the left side by Alleyne which he snapped up to hammer a right footer into an open goal with the keeper stranded. It was a little too late.
In the other encounter, Pele and Sunburst Camptown drew nil-all.
