A 22-year-old Sophia minibus conductor was killed and eleven passengers injured at around 20:00 hrs yesterday after the vehicle in which they were travelling collided with a car at the intersection of Brickdam and Brummel Place.
Dead is Gavin Daly, of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara.
The minibus driver told reporters that he was heading east along Brickdam at a fast rate when he slammed into a car that was heading south along Brummel Place into Brickdam. The bus, BPP 9210, then toppled before ending up on its side.
Eyewitnesses said that the conductor’s head and upper body were crushed beneath the overturned bus. He died on the spot.
Passersby and an ambulance took the injured, who are mainly from Sophia, to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Most of the victims sustained lacerations and none appeared to be seriously injured.
Hospital officials identified the injured as Samantha Darlington and Mijah Gordon, of E Field, Sophia; Monty Semple, of Cummings Park Sophia; Tracy Gibson of Sophia; Colin Cyrus, of Republic Street, Newtown, Sheleza Franklin of Sophia, Neil Grenville, 23 of Rainbow City, Linden; Cordel Harris, of ‘C’ Field Sophia; Devon Abrams; Latoya Rigby of North Ruimveldt and Sheldon Mc Kenzie of Darrel St, South Ruimveldt.
There were still being treated at press time.
