– urges GFF to spring into action
FIFA Development Officer Howard McIntosh, who is in Guyana for first hand interactions with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Executive and various stakeholders, told the media yesterday, during a briefing, at the GFF Head Office in Section ‘K’, Campbellville that the country’s performance in relation to the long awaited GOAL Project, is very poor.
McIntosh, who prior to opening remarks cautioned that he would be very frank, said that the FIFA Initiative which was put in place since 1999 so that members could have at least a Head Office and Technical Centre needs some urgent action and reminded that, “money doesn’t just sit around”, so if the GFF fails to achieve significant progress by the time the next Developmental Meeting is held then there is a strong possibility that the Project could be
withdrawn.
According to McIntosh the funds for the Project has already been committed which total in the vicinity of US$900,000 with $400,000 coming from the specified allotment initially given for the undertaking, while Guyana asked that the monies awarded for a Special Project be diverted into the GOAL Project as well.
McIntosh, however, was quick to assert that no monies for the Project are ever given to the GFF, but rather to the Consultant / Contractor.
The FIFA Official reminded that his first and foremost job is to promote the game, informing that among the discussions he intends to conduct with the local body is the encourage the development of the women’s game along with the juniors, especially at the grassroots levels.
McIntosh took the time to meet with Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Permanent Secretary within the Ministry Alfred King where he held discussions on the sport’s further development, how the Government could assist and what if any assistance FIFA could offer for a project that is to be undertaken at the National Stadium.
He plans to meet with other stakeholders during his visit as well.
President of the GFF Christopher Matthias, who chaired the Briefing, said that McIntosh’s visit is also to assess where Guyana’s football is in terms of its developmental plans and policies as mandated by FIFA and to advise where necessary.
Matthias assured that all news pertaining to the GOAL Project and decisions coming out of the deliberations with the FIFA Development Officer will be given at a later date.
Among the other attendees present at the Briefing were Vice-Presidents Ivan Persaud, Collie Hercules and Rawleston Adams, Committee member Keith O’Jeer and General Secretary Noel Adonis.
