As the executives of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) continue to address the development of their charges for representation at the Brazil 2016 Olympics, three boxers will leave Guyana today to participate in a one-day Invitational Tournament under the auspices of the Barbados Amateur Boxing Association (BABA), scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
Those leaving for national duty are Flyweight boxers, Orin Bancroft, Junior Henry and Joel Williamson. Bancroft and Henry will fight in the junior category while Williamson will compete among the seniors. The boxers will be accompanied by James Walcott who will double as the Manager and Coach.
Additionally, three other pugilists will depart Guyana on Tuesday September 17 next for Lima Peru to participate in the Junior South American Games slated to be contested from September 21-25 next. They are Michael April (43kgs), Joel Williamson (56kgs) and Travis Fraser (69kgs). This team will be coached and managed by National Coach, Wensel Thomas.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with the three boxers to the Peru staged games as they went through their paces yesterday morning under the tutelage of Thomas. He said that the boxers are in the best of condition and are confident of procuring medals at the event.
Thomas said that his charges were engaged in rigid training over the past few weeks with particular emphasis on strength and conditioning exercises. He said that the boxers are now concentrating on speed and endurance even as he addresses the technical aspect of their development.
Meanwhile, Coach of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Sebert Blake, leaves Guyana sometime next week to undergo a training course in Sports, Science and Boxing Specifics in Hungary.
The course is facilitated by the executive of the Guyana Olympics Association and will last for three months. Blake said that he is currently completing the requirements.
