– victim almost decapitated
Police are trying to find the motive behind the brutal murder of a 53-year-old vagrant, whose body was found at around 04:00 hrs yesterday outside the Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara market.
Seepaul Beharry, known to residents as ‘Seeo’, was found slumped on a bench at the front of a small shop located in Market Street, Golden Grove. His throat was slit from ear to ear, and he had also been stabbed to the chest and ribs.
Police suspect that Beharry, who has been a fixture around the market for several years, was murdered sometime around 03:00 hrs during a heavy downpour.
None of the residents recalled hearing any unusual sounds on Monday night or during the early hours yesterday.
Some residents suggested that the vagrant was slain because he spotted someone committing a crime in the area. They said that although he was a heavy drinker, ‘Seeo’ was also outspoken about any wrongdoing in the community.
According to reports, a resident spotted Beharry’s body at around 04:00 hrs and told a female stallholder who lives near the market. However, the fearful stallholder reportedly did not venture outside until hours later. Police eventually arrived at around 08:00 hrs.
A resident recalled seeing Beharry and other men from the area sitting on the market bench at around 23:00 hrs on Monday. He recalled that some of the men were consuming alcohol.
A female resident said ‘Seeo’ had lived around the market over the past 25 years.
