Falcons defeated defending champions Maryville by 51 runs in the opening fixture of the Phyllis Carter Memorial Twenty20 cricket competition last Sunday in the Essequibo River Island of Leguan.
Falcons batted first after winning the toss and were bowled out for 93 in 16.3 overs at the Enterprise Ground. Rayon Austin stroked three sixes in a top score of 24, Parmanand Pariag supported with 16 and Rick Stephen 12.
Paul Williams was the pick of the bowlers with 3-13 from 4 overs while Warren Williams claimed 3-27 from 4. Maryville found the going tough and were skittled out for 43 in 9.5 overs in reply. Mark Williams and Joel Singh with 11 each were the only batsmen that reached double figures.
Stephen returned to capture 3-3 while Kevin Chaitram snared 2-3 and Austin 2-13 for the winners. Before the start of play both teams were met by Janice Carter, daughter of the late Phyllis Carter, who said that her family is happy to be associated with the development of the game on the Island once again.
She spoke about the importance of discipline and urged the players to take the game seriously. Janice also credited the Leguan Cricket Committee (LCC) for organising the tournament.
President of the Leguan Cricket Committee Virendra Chintamani in brief remarks thanked the sponsors and stated that the LCC will be using the tournament to select the Island’s team for the Essequibo Cricket Board 50-overs Busta competition which is expected to start in October.
The competition which is sponsored by the Carter family in memory of the late Phyllis Carter who was a resident of Leguan continues on Saturday.
