A 44-year-old mason of Sophia was shot dead during a confrontation with heavily armed ranks of a police mobile patrol unit at his home last night. The man, Kampta Persaud called Krishna, received a bullet to his head from a police rifle after the ranks opened fire in an attempt to arrest him.
He died five minutes after arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation around 20:15 hours.
Police claimed that the man had earlier attacked one of the ranks, chopping him on his hand with a cutlass.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the police went to the area to investigate a report that Persaud had threatened his neighbour
The police claimed that upon confronting Persaud, the man refused an invitation to go with them to the Sparendaam Police Station.
“He came out the door and say, ‘I ain’t going nowhere with y’all. Ah gon kill alyuh’. He run back inside fuh a cutlass and start fire chop,” a police rank told kaieteur News.
He said that after one of the chops struck the unit leader, Corporal Ramdat who was standing just outside the front door of the house, on his hand, Persaud then ran back into his house and secured himself.
According to the police, a few warning shots were fired in an attempt to get Persaud to surrender and when he did not, the ranks fired a round which pierced the wooden wall of the house and struck the victim at the back of his head.
The ranks then entered the house and found Persaud lying in a pool of blood almost dead.
Evidence in the house revealed that the badly wounded man was dragged out of his house and placed into the police vehicle and taken to the hospital.
“He came in gasping for breath and five minutes later he died,” a porter at the hospital told Kaieteur News.
But as usual eyewitness accounts differ from the police version of what transpired.
This newspaper was told that when Persaud saw the police he ran into his house and locked the door to prevent them from entering.
One eyewitness said that the police then kicked open his door and then gunshots were heard, after which the ranks were seen hurriedly dragging Persaud out of his house. “We hear about four gunshots,” the eyewitness said.
