– Neblett also impressive
A disappointingly low turnout combined with intermittent rain failed to dampen a day that witnessed some exciting racing with former Group 4 champion Kevin Jeffrey and Superbiker Joel Neblett headlining the list of outstanding performances as the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) 2nd ‘Race of Champions’ Meet ended yesterday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Jeffrey driving a Mitsubishi Evolution VIII piloted the car to two victories and a second place from three starts, while Neblett, also registered two wins to crown an impressive showing for the day.
The event, which served as a precursor for Guyana’s leg of the CMRC in November, saw Jeffrey and Andrew King treat the small but appreciative band of spectators to the kind of daredevilry that has typified the two combatants over the years as they raced almost neck to neck over the three events with the former displaying more power in the straightaway, while King threatened every time in the gooseneck and clubhouse turn.
In the opening Group 4 event, Jeffrey, who started on pole, was quick to the first turn and even though King fought gallantly to pull back the lead with some brutal driving on all the turns and gooseneck, Jeffrey was too powerful on the back and clubhouse straights that made his advantage a decisive one in the end.
Paul Vieira out of Canada, try as he may, simply did not have the horse power to rein in the top two drivers and had to settle for third place.
Having seen Jeffrey’s tactics in the opening event, King approached the start of the second race more aggressively, but the end result was just a carbon copy of the initial race as Jeffrey took his second chequered flag ahead of King and Vieira again.
In the final event however, King turned the tables on Jeffrey and piloted his Mazda RX-7 to victory.
King jumped from the post and never relinquished his lead. But with three laps to go, the fans were treated to some excitement as Jeffrey applied the pressure on King but the experienced driver kept his composure to reign over his arch rival.
“The car and the engine performed well today” said Jeffrey. “Two wins and a second I will take that any day of the week.”
Speaking of November, Jeffrey said that he will up the ante and is looking forward to defending home turf with King and champion driver Mark Vieira who did not compete yesterday.
Neblett was in sublime form as he stormed to two impressive wins, while young Nikhil Seereram took the other race with reigning champion Stephen Vieira occupying second place in the final event after Seereram fell around the gooseneck following challenge from Vieira.
Hemant Boodram riding in the 125cc was also impressive. Some major sponsors included GT&T, Banks DIH Limited, Beharry Automotive Limited, Rent a Tent and The Trophy Stall.
The full results will be made known in the next issue.
