A woman and a baby girl were killed and several others injured after a minibus in which they were travelling overturned yesterday in the Kairuni Creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The victims were identified as Anastasia Forde, 23, and Taquayyah Sheppard, who was six months old.
Among those injured are the baby’s parents- Sean Sheppard and Tinesha Victor and Anastasia Forde’s mother, Shonette Adams, 43. They were all heading to the Splashmins Fun Park for the Jamzone Summer event when the tragedy occurred.
Overseas-based Dr. William Kyte, Lambert Baveghems, 54, who are in Guyana to facilitate an outreach programme, are said to be in critical condition. Baveghems was reportedly accompanying Dr. Kyte to Georgetown to pick up his luggage.
The driver, Joel Chapman; Clinton Europe of Timehri; Ouzzie Bollers, 34, of West Bank Demerara; L. Rose, 45, of West Coast Berbice; and Shaquille Barker, 17, of Albouystown Georgetown, were also injured.
Barker, who suffered a fractured hand, told Kaieteur News that he does not know what caused the accident. However, he recalled that after the minibus toppled and water began rushing in, “somebody break a window fuh everybody come out.”
Barker said that as those in front of him were “lined up” to exit the bus, and he was feeling for his haversack, when he felt something in the back seat. He explained that while he could not see what it was at the time, he is now sure that he had touched the dead woman, Anastasia Forde.
Barker said that he was the last person to come out of the overturned bus, and be transported to the hospital by public spirited persons. Some persons were taken to the hospital via ambulance.
Meanwhile, upon their arrival at the hospital some of Forde’s relatives alleged that she was still alive when the undertakers wrapped her body and placed it in the hearse.
It was described as a massive commotion at the Linden Hospital when about 18 injured persons were rushed to its Accident and Emergency Unit.
