The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has named a five-member team including four cyclists that will represent this nation at the inaugural South American Youth Games set for Lima, Peru from September 9 to 29, 2013.
Akeem Arthur, Shaquel Agard Stephano Husbands and the lone female Crystal Lambert will represent the Golden Arrowhead along with Coach, William Howard. Cycling will see three components being contested, BMX, Mountain and Road racing.
Guyana will be represented at these inaugural Games in seven of the seventeen disciplines: Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Boxing, Table Tennis, Cycling and Weightlifting.
There will be a total of 213 events (Men’s 109; Women’s 91; Mixed 13) with fourteen countries expected to participate including Guyana. The others are Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and hosts, Peru.
The President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, Mr. Jose Quinones Gonzalez has promised that the Games will be of the highest degree of excellence.
The launching of the South-American Youth Games is part of the South American Sports Organisation (ODESUR) strategic planning, and seeks the development of sports throughout the region. The initiative is aligned to the Youth Olympic Games and follows the same schedule of sports, age range and philosophy towards the strengthening of sport practice and the encouragement of culture and the promotion of ethics and education of the youth.
In the first edition of the Games the athletes will compete for medals in 17 disciplines: Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Canoeing (Kayak), Cycling, Fencing, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Weightlifting, Wresting, Swimming, Rowing, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, Triathlon and Sailing.
