Ramnaresh Sarwan has been appointed Guyana Captain against Champions League qualifiers Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium on August 30 & 31 in two warm-up T20 fixtures before the visitors depart for India next month.
The 33-year-old right hander from the Essequibo Island of Wakenaam led Guyana to their only two regional T20 championships in 2006 & 2010 and is presently captaining the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the ongoing LPCL T20 tournament.
Test left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul skippered the Guyanese in this year’s Caribbean T20 tournament which T&T won for the third consecutive year to qualify for the Champions League.
Sarwan has featured in just 18 T20 Internationals since making his debut in 2007 against South Africa and has managed only two fifties at an average of 22.92 and a strike rate of 104.19.
The Chaplinesque stroke player registered his highest T20 score of 70 in South Africa when he led Guyana to their lone participation at the Champions League three years ago and will have as his deputy Chris Barnwell.
The 26 year-old Barnwell has represented the West Indies in six T20 Internationals and has also played in the IPL as an all-rounder.
The only new comer to the Guyana senior team is 2007 national under-19 opener Robin Bacchus. The 24-year old left hander plays for GCC in local cricket and could make his senior team debut in this month end’s encounter against the team from the twin Island Republic.
Berbician off-spinner 26-year-old Rajiv Ivan made his senior team debut this year against the Windward Islands in St Vincent, while his only other Regional Super50 game was at Providence against Jamaica. The Rosehall Town player will hope to make his T20 debut against T&T.
The rest of the squad have all had senior team experience with Sarwan, Narsingh Deonarine, Devendra Bishoo, Permaul, Barnwell and Leon Johnson all representing the West Indies senior team in Tests, ODIs or the T20 level.
Guyana team: Ramnaresh Sarwan (Capt), Chris Barnwell (V/Capt), Narsingh Deonarine, , Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Leon Johnson, Steven Jacobs, Trevon Griffith, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph, Anthony Bramble, Zaheer Mohamed, Rajiv Ivan and Robin Bacchus.
