Defending junior and juvenile Caribbean cycling champions Guyana gave up both gold medal positions when the 8th edition of the premier regional event hosted by the Aruba Cycling Federation, was staged recently.
The five member Guyanese team juniors Akeem Arthur, Michael Anthony, Shaquel Agard, Hamza Eastman and Pre-Junior (juvenile) Romello Crawford, while not bring back gold, still represented the land of their birth with pride.
In the junior male 74km road race, Guyana took silver and bronze through Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony both clocking – 2hrs 13mins 35secs. This race was won by Arthur Puerto Rico’s Paul John in 2 Hours 12 Minutes 33 Seconds.
Shaquel Agard ended 11th overall in (2hrs 15mins 31secs) while Hamza Eastman, who was in the leading pack and on course for a podium position, unfortunately had some technical problems (burst chain) which put paid to his chances as he failed to complete the race.
In the Pre-Junior 59.20km race, Romello Crawford did not complete the distance, winning was Curacao’s Stijn Watkis in One Hour 50 minutes 38 Seconds. Pedro Rosa Nunez of Puerto Rich took the silver (1hr 50mins 43secs) with the bronze going to Jonathan Croes of Aruba (1hr 50mins 49secs).
In the junior male Individual Time Trials (15) Anthony placed 6th and Eastman 10th; Brandon Martinez of Puerto Rick was the winner. Romello Crawford finished 12th among the Pre-Juniors.
Wining the junior female 44.40km road race was Trinidad and Tobago’s Kieana Lester in One Hour 38 Minutes 28 Seconds. Aruba’s Cherley Van Der Linden took the silver with Bermuda’s Gabriella Arnold settling for the silver. Aruba finished one/two in the junior 9km female time trials (Oriana Thielman & Cherley Van Der Linden) with T&T’s Keiana Lester placing third.
Eleven countries participated this year, Anguilla, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Curacao, Guyana, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and the US Virgin Islands.
Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Cheryl Thompson offered congratulations to the team for a fine performance despite not bring back gold. Thompson is of the view that they still did their country proud.
“The level of depth we have as a cycling nation with so many youngsters available to us is very encouraging and I am very proud of these boys. As a federation, we will continue to do our best in terms of seeking exposure for them to continue in their development.”
There are a few more international events that the GCF will be pursuing for local riders.
