– largest turn out this year – Hassan Mohamed
It has been the longest surviving coaching programme for any sport in Guyana over the years. We’re talking of the National Sports Commission sponsored ‘Teach Them Young’ cycling programme that is conducted by National Coach, Hassan Mohamed.
This year marks the 37th consecutive year that this programme has been in existence and one can safely say that it is the main reason for the continued dominance of Guyana in the cycling arena in the Caribbean especially at the junior and juvenile levels.
Presently, Guyana holds the distinction of having both the junior and juvenile Caribbean champions in Paul De Nobrega and Michael Anthony and while Anthony is Linden based his constant rise in the cycling ranks can be attributed to the many cycling programmes that are a spinoff of the annual July/August programme.
This year, the man that can be best described as ‘Mr. Cycling’ Hassan Mohamed said that this would have been the largest turn out of cyclists for the annual activity, numbering 59 inclusive of eight (8) 5-year-old riders.
He disclosed that some of them did not even know to rides a bicycle while a few others were using training wheels but in a few days they were taught how to ride and have been doing well ever since. Mohamed noted that he is receiving admirable assistance from Mr. Arnold Sookraj with the youngsters.
This year’s programme got underway on July 8 and will conclude on August 30. It is being held at the Inner Circuit of the National Park with sessions running Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 11:00hrs.
The participants are being taught the fundamentals of the sport which includes first and foremost, discipline. Other areas of focus are setting a bike; bike control and how to pedal among others.
Mohamed extended gratitude to Director of Sport Neil Kumar and the National Sports Commission for their continued partnership in making the programme a consistent success. Kudos was also extended to the National Parks Commission and workers at that entity.
This annual ‘Teach Them Young’ programme Mohamed said will continue to be around for many more years to come and as long as God wills, he will continue to be associated with it.
“This is what I love doing, teach and coaching these young riders, I have been doing it ever since the start of the programme and will continue to do so. As I said before, every top cyclist that Guyana has produced would have passed through this programme at some juncture and that is satisfaction enough for me and I’m sure the NSC”. (Franklin Wilson)
