The organisers have labeled it the best tournament coming out of the West Coast Demerara area and football fans will be able to weigh the strength and authenticity of their prognosis when action gets underway in the Slingertz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football ‘Goal for Gold’ football extravaganza, Saturday August 10 next at venues in Georgetown and on the West Coast.
The tournament is two tiered in nature with 16 male teams and 8 women
teams battling for respective honours. The male teams include Alpha United, Camptown FC, Rhythm Squad FC, GDF, Conquerors FC, Pele FC, Western Tigers (Georgetown), Bakewell Topp XX, Netrockers, Milerock (Linden) and Uitvlugt, Den Amstel, Seawall and Slingertz (West Demerara). The women’s teams are drawn from Georgetown, Bartica, West Demerara and Linden.
The winner of the male tournament pockets two million dollars while the runners up win half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers receive $500,000 and $300,000 respectively. The females will also compete for lucrative prizes but the organisers are currently working on the ramifications before arriving at final figures. However, each of the teams will receive $25,000 to assist with preparations.
Meanwhile, Ansa McAL has acquiesced to a sponsorship deal and the tournament organisers and several members of the Slingertz committee journeyed to the Betterverwagting offices of the sponsor yesterday to receive the handsome package.
Among those that comprised the head table were representatives of the Slingertz organisation, Mark Young and Colin Aaron, Public Relations Officer (Ansa McAL), Darshanie Yussuf, Brand Manager (Stag Beer), Sunesh Maikoo and President of the National Association of Woman’s Football, Vanessa Dickenson.
Mr. Maikoo lauded the organisers for their hard work in making the tournament a reality while stating that his company had supported a similar tournament during the Mashramani celebrations. He said that administrators were heartened by the quality of football exhibited then which served to sway the decision for support of the impending tournament.
Colin Aaron was indeed heartened by the chivalry extended by Ansa McAL and thanked his benefactors. He said that the female tournament was decided upon to assist in the ongoing promotional works of the women.
“We are intent on the development and improvement of the club structures for the women hence this initiative,” explained Mr. Aaron.
Ms. Yussuf handed over the sponsorship package to facilitate the women’s segment of the tournament to Ms. Dickenson and said that one of the main reasons that her company had rendered support hinged strongly on the collaboration of both sexes in the competition.
She further said that she is optimistic that the talents nestling in the women’s fraternity would eventually rise to the fore.
When activities get underway on Saturday, Camptown will face off with Uitvlugt while Den Amstel tackles Riddim Squad. The venue will be either the GFC or the Wales Community Centre ground. The organisers said that they are keeping an eye on the weather as the GFC is their first choice; should the rains persist they will be forced to use the West Demerara venue.
