Amazon Warriors take on Jamaica Tallawahs tonight; another capacity crowd expected
By Zaheer Mohamed
Coach of the Guyana Amazon Warriors Roger Harper said his team will be looking to continue their winning ways when they take on the Jamaica Tallawahs tonight when the Limacol Caribbean Premier League T20 Tournament continues at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 20:00hrs.
The home team started their campaign positively when they overcame the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel by 19 runs in a tense finish on Wednesday evening before a full house and Harper said at a press conference held yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium that he is satisfied with the victory.
“The team played well, but there are a few areas where we can improve especially the catching and we are looking to build”, added Harper, one of the finest fielders the game has ever seen.
When quizzed about the threat of opener Chris Gayle, captain of the Amazon Warriors Ramnaresh Sarwan said Gayle is well known throughout the world, but we will put our plan in place and hopefully be able to execute it and get the better of him.
Meanwhile Coach of the Jamaican Tallawahs Paul Nixon expressed confidence that his team can give a good account of themselves. “The guys did well during their training sessions at Sabina Park and everyone is happy. There is a good relationship with the guys”, stated Nixon.
He stated that they will practice in Guyana for the first time as a squad. “It’s very difficult for a coach to change people technically over a short period of time. We have to focus on how we can fine tune ourselves’, he added.
Nixon pointed out that he is not only looking to Chris Gayle to win matches. “Chris is a high class player and he is desirous to do well and everyone is in that circle. I am looking to the younger guys to win games and not just Chris. The Guys are in great spirits, but I don’t think we can have a specific strategy, we got to have two to three plans and get the basics right”, concluded Nixon.
Another capacity crowd is expected when the home team will look to make it two in a row. Martin Guptill and Lendl Simmons gave them a decent start in their first game but the middle order must dig in a bit more
to give the bowlers sizeable totals to defend.
Skipper Sarwan hit the ball well and along with James Franklyn beefed up the score towards the end of their innings, but Sarwan will be looking forward to more support from the middle order which includes Narsingh Deonarine, Muhammed Hafeez, Christopher Barnwell and Denesh Ramdin.
Krishmar Santokie bowled well at the death and was ably supported by Veerasammy Permaul; Sunil Narine and Hafeez are excellent spinners and should fine the pitch much to their liking.
All eyes will be Tallawahs opener Gayle and fans can expect an enthralling battle between him and the Warriors’ spinners. Ahmad Shahzad, Danza Hyatt and Jacques Rudolph are capable hitters. The bowling attack is without the injured Ravi Rampaul, but Muthiah Muralitharan, all rounder Andre Russell and Vernon Philander will lead them in this area.
