Dear Editor,
The Amaila Falls issue has been under welcome scrutiny on several fronts but the one front which has been neglected is the huge sums spent on publicity. Millions of dollars were stealthily expended on billboards and advertisements without any tender and most contracts were given to one special company though there are other companies and individual artists who could have done the work much cheaper.
A good example of the type of work produced is a purportedly Amaila Falls billboard on the East Bank Demerara Road produced by a local company. This may have been the only contract given to that company but millions of dollars were believed to have been paid for that East Bank Road billboard which advertised a Falls named AMALIA and not AMAILA FALLS which the Government had paid to advertise. AMALIA FALLS is somewhere else and not AMAILA FALLS.
The Government must demand the return the money paid since it failed to carry out its contract. And if the company does not return the money the officer or Minister responsible for awarding this contract should be surcharged and should also explain why no tender was invited.
Parliamentarians and other patriotic people must elicit an answer from the Minister responsible.
