Barbados Tridents defeated St. Lucia Zouks by 17 runs as the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) T20 Tournament got off to an exciting start at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown Barbados last evening.
Barbados Tridents batted first and posted 169-5 off their allocation off 20 overs. Man-of-the-match Shoaib Malik top scored with a 51 ball 78 (8×4 1×6) while Keiron Pollard made a robust 61* from 46 balls (4×4 3×6). Extras contributed 12; the only other batsman that made it into double figures was Jonathan Carter with 11.
Captain Darren Sammy led the bowling with 2-36 from his four overs while there was one each for Albie Morkel, Shane Shillingford and Tino Best.
St. Lucia Zouks got off to a blazing start with Andre Fletcher and Tamim Iqbal firing on all cylinders adding 57 for the opening stand before Iqbal was stumped by wicketkeeper Umar Akmal off Ashley Nurse for 22 in the sixth over.
Fletcher continued to stroke the ball well before he was dismissed for 57 off 41 balls (4×4 4×6). St. Lucia Zouks suffered a mini collapse before Sammy belted 34 off 16 balls (4×4 2×6) to give his team a glimmer of hope.
But purposeful bowling from Pollard who snared 3-15, backed up by Ashley Nurse 2-18, Riyad Emrit 2-20 and Jason Holder 2-42 orchestrated the demise of St. Lucia Zouks to 152 all out in 19.4 overs to hand Barbados Tridents a hard fought victory.
Pollard received the Limacol Super Six award while the Digicel 4 G fastest scorer prize went to Sammy with a strike rate 218; Barbados Tridents received the winning cash prize of USD$25,000.
