The New Amsterdam Mayor & Town Council (M&TC) has stepped up the campaign to rid the streets of the town of roadside encumbrances and vending, which pose a hazard to pedestrians and motorists likewise.
During the past week, Deputy Mayor Mr. Harold Dabydeen was seen with a contingent of Constables and police officers perusing Main Street as well as Pitt Street, and warning several shop and store owners to remove the huge encumbrances in front of their businesses, which encroach on the government’s reserves.
Persons illegally vending on the road shoulders and business proprietors encroaching along the reserves were ordered to move or relocate. When approached, Dabydeen stated that he was dealing with the “lawlessness that exists in the town”.
“I really need to clean this town up and I don’t want any obstacles in this town! I want the residents of the town to maintain their pride. New Amsterdam is a town of glory and we have to bring it back to its glory. The wild generation of today is damaging the town and I may have to execute the law.”
He stated that the obstacles will be removed “and I don’t want to see it back.” He added, too, that the New Amsterdam Market has enough space and invited persons to go in and see the Market Clerk to make arrangements to have stalls there.
The Deputy-Mayor said that the Council is concerned about the encumbrances that were erected by several businessmen around Main Street and Pitt Street, and they will be given up to this weekend to have them removed. Failure to remove them will result in the Council taking further action.
“We want to get back the capacity road so the limbs and life of people will be preserved…I am warning Pitt Street vendors and proprietors who have extensions of shed, I am asking them to put themselves in order, or I will have the law and move them by force.”
