Covent Garden claw back twice to beat Leonora 4-3

The Grove Community Centre Ground was a noisy venue yesterday when the quarterfinal match between visitors Leonora Secondary and home team, Covent Garden Secondary was contested.

Both sides would have been dominant in their prior matches and the platform was made for an enthralling match-up and that is exactly what the fans were able to witness as the home team came back from behind twice to take the lead and the eventual win, booking a semifinal place against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Waramadong who defeated Santa Rosa yesterday 4-0.
Leonora, like they did against Uitvlugt in the Region #3 final, took the lead but were once again guilty of retreating after scoring.
A well executed free kick by Captain Aubrey Greene in the 23rd minute handed Leonora the advantage. The soggy nature of the field due to consistent rain over the past few days did not take away from the excitement.
Leonora were enjoying a very good run and created two more opportunities soon after but Andrew Fowler, fouled up on both occasions, chances which would have come back later to haunt them.
Covent Garden absorbed the pressure admirably and waited their chance to strike back and that they did on the stroke of half time when Trevon Gaskin nailed a powerful shot past goalkeeper Joshua Allen. Leonora 1, Covent Garden 1.
The second half promised lots of action and the fair sized crowd mainly made up of the home team supporters kept encouraging their fellow villagers.
It was Leonora that would have regained the lead in the 60th minute compliments of a Jamal Pereira goal. But despite giving up the lead again, Covent Garden kept pegging away. Thirteen minutes later the equalizer came off the boot of Kevin Agard; games on 2-2.
From this point onwards, it was no looking back for Covent Garden as they turned up the heat against Leonora. They took the lead for the first time two minutes after the equalizer when Roddick McKenzie nailed another well take shot past Rodney Scott. Covent Garden 3, Leonora 2.
Five minutes later the game was turned fully in favour of Covent Garden when Ricky Dass in a one vs. one with the goalie after getting past the defenders ensured his shot settled at the back of the nets; Covent Garden 4 Leonora 2.
The West Demerara champions were out of it now but were able to lessen the final score line when Gavin Graham scored with five minutes to full time. The ensuing minutes were exciting but did not produce any further goals, the game ending 4-3 to Covent Garden, earning them a semifinal date with Waramadong on Wednesday at 15:30hrs at a venue to be announced.
