Last year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship (DSFC) finalists Waramadong are well on course for yet another final and are no doubt confident of going all the way following their 13-0 demolition of Charity Secondary in their playoff game of DSFC contested at the picturesque Kamarang/Warawatta Sports Ground, Upper Mazaruni on Wednesday afternoon last.
The colorful crowd made up of residents from 15 surrounding villages apart from the host were treated to some exciting ball weaving skills despite the fact that the final score line was so large.
It was the magic of forward Whazir Bascome that mesmerized the Charity defence, the dapper player rocked the nets on seven (7) occasions and was admirably supported with a brace each from Myles Albert and Dexter Fernandes as Waramadong sent out a message to all standing in their path that they mean serious business in this third edition of the nationwide competition.
Charity, having dispatched the likes of Essequibo Technical Institute (6-1), New Opportunity Corp (7-1) and Aroura 3-2 in a close battle, would have fancied their chances of upsetting the skillful Waramadong boys but that was not to be.
Waramadong, with wins over Three Miles (6-0) and Bartica 3-2 in an epic battle, new that they were odds on favourites to win and went about that task in clinical fashion. Charity were never able to get settled and the vociferous home crowd was an added fillip for the Waramadong boys.
The longest period of keeping Waramadong at bay was the opening 22 minutes of play but once that initial drought passed, goalkeeper Leland Smith found himself making regular treks to the back of the nets to retrieve the ball.
Charity did do their best to keep the Waramadong strike force at bay but their defiance came to an end trough a ripping right foot stunner from Leandro Francis when the match was 22 minutes old.
The fact that their efforts were being thwarted in the final third pushed the host team to try the keep from long range and that mode of attack paid dividends. Francis’ shot was rifled in from some 30 yards out and flew past the outstretched hands of Smith.
Thereafter, long range shots reigned in from all angles as Waramadong tightened their hold on the game. Myles Albert’s double within a minute of each other in the 29th and 30th minute meant that there was going to be no sparing of the Charity boys. Then came the Whazir Bascome show.
The nippy forward took over proceedings, opening his account in the 36th minute, lobbying the ball over the advancing goalie. The score line increased further to 5-0 four minutes to the half when Bascome in a one on one with Smith, slipped the ball past him to his left.
The writing was already on the wall for Charity as the Waramadong team showed their superior quickness to the ball, exhibited more awareness and organisation apart from better tactical skills.
Charity however, continued to do their best, they instituted their first change in the 41st minute when Barry Fraser made way for Alex Joime. There would have been no relenting by Waramadong in the second half.
Charity made their second change at the start of this half when forward Clinton D’Oliveira was introduced. Coach Rawle Griffith would have hoped that the two changes would have brought some life to his side but that was not to be as the Waramadong custodian, Gerald Isaacs continued to have little or nothing to do, his defence controlling the flow and for the most part, played high.
Fernando Hunter it was who took the score to 6-0 two minutes (47) after the break before Bascome was back in the thick of things, scoring in the 53rd, 60th and 61st minute. Dexter Fernandes netted his brace in the 75th and 80th minute, while Bascome closed out his tally of 7 in the 76th and 86th minute.
When the final whistle was sounded, it brought great relief to the Charity side while at the same time conforming Waramadong’s quarterfinal date with Santa Rosa Secondary on Sunday at the Ministry of Education Ground from 16:00hrs.
Meanwhile, the game was witnessed by Vice Chairperson of Region 7 Ms. Amrita Thomas who welcomed all, Education Officer Mr. Thomas, Chairman of the District Sports Council and Digicel Customer Care Manager, Sherwin Osborne.
Sports Officer Thomas expressed gratitude to Digicel for the vision in brining off a tournament of this magnitude for the third consecutive year. He noted that the youths are afforded the platform to showcase their talent and it can only serve to further motivate and inspire the young players to greater heights.
Osborne, while thanking the teams, teachers and fans for their excellent support, posited that his company’s dream from the start was to have a truly national event and they have been able to see that in the three years to date.
He also stated that they have very competitive games in all the regions so far with some 150 schools participating their year.
“Digicel will continue to play its role in providing the platform for our young people to shine. Many players have been on show this year, we are truly grateful for the level of support we have witnessed this year from the schools, officials and you the fans. I want to assure to here in Region 7 that you will continue to enjoy Digicel Schools Football in your region.”
