Police from all the various subdivisions and sections of all the Berbice B division joined with members of the community as they came out in their numbers to participate in a fitness walk to mark the continuing 174th police anniversary programme.
The 5Km walk, which began at the junction of the Berbice River Bridge at Palmyra, East Coast Berbice at 06:00 hrs and made its way along the main Corentyne thoroughfare over the Canje Bridge into New Amsterdam and ended at the B Division Police Headquarters at Couberg and Strand New Amsterdam.
Led by B division Commander Senior Superintendent Clifton Hickens, Superintendents Hugh Jessemy and Calvin Brutus and other senior officers from all the subdivision including subdivisions One (New Amsterdam / Canje / East Bank and East Coast), Two (Lower and upper Corentyne and Corentyne River and Three (West Berbice) sub divisions along with Traffic department, CID and Special Constabulary, Neighbourhood police and Community policing groups and some members of the public, participated in the event.
At the station the ranks were carried through their (exercise) calisthenics paces by Senior Superintendent Hickens and other senior ranks.
Apart from the activity being a part of the 174th anniversary observance it was also held to keep ranks fit and to incorporate members of the public in the police activities.
The Month of activities, which began a week ago with a thanksgiving and church service which was held at the Divisional Headquarters, has also seen the ranks involved in The Commander’s Relay and a day of sports. A number of indoor and outdoor sporting activities are also planned to mark the celebrations. (Samuel Whyte)
