Shazam Outar, 22, of Warren Village, East Coast Berbice was placed on $70,000 bail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on Friday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court after he appeared before her on the charge of rape.
The unemployed man is accused of committing the act on April 15, last, on a girl from the neighbourhood at his home.
Prosecuting, Sergeant Phillip Sheriff told the court that the two individuals are known to each other. On the day in question the accused invited the teen over to his house and forcefully had sex with her against her will. The matter was reported and the man was arrested. A file was prepared and it was advised that he be charged.
In court, defence attorney Charrandass Persaud in his plea for bail queried the charge. He stated that his client and the young woman were having a relationship. He stated that the young woman was big enough to make her own decisions. But it was her parents who had some problems with the relationship and pushed for the matter to be reported, hence the charge.
The Magistrate in granting bail ordered that the accused report to the Lewis Manor Police Outpost on the East Coast Berbice every Friday. Further, he must not come within 25 feet of the girl until the determination of the matter.
He will have to return to court on August 12.
