Throughout the tournament, senior National Chess Champion, Taffin Khan, had dominated the board so it came as no surprise when he outshone the other players and after amassing an impeccable 7 points, he was duly declared champion when activities in the Trophy Stall Chess Tournament concluded at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, Sunday July 7 last.
Khan’s junior counterpart, Anthony Drayton, dropped one of his games to Khan and another to Alexander Duncan but rebounded to cop the junior crown after scoring 5 points.
Seniors, Maria Thomas, the lone female participant, and Raymond Singh, both amassed 5 points apiece but the former player benefited from the tie break system, while Canada-based Guyanese, Raymond Singh and Cleveland Hutson finished third and fourth respectively.
Roberto Neto was the second best junior player while former junior champion, Hai Feng Su closed off the podium spots with Carlos Petterson coming in fourth. The Best Beginner was 13 years old, Rajiv Muneshwer, of Queens College; he defeated last year’s national junior champion finalists, Davion Mars.
Once again, as in several previous tournaments, Omar Britton Grant was adjudged the Best Under-16 Player, while Ron Motilall copped the prize for Best U-19 player.
The other senior scores are: Maria Thomas and Raymond Singh (5 points apiece) and Cleveland Hutson 4 ½. Among the juniors, Anthony Drayton scored 5 points, Roberto Neto 4 ½ , former National Junior Champion Hai Feng Su and Carlos Petterson scored 4 points each, while Rajiv Muneshwer and Ron Motilall scored 3 points each with Omar Britton Grant recording 2 ½ points.
Nine seniors and 13 junior players participated in the tournament which consisted of seven rounds.
