A gang of heavily-armed bandits escaped with some $2M in cash and jewellery at around 18:30 hrs on Monday after beating and terrorizing the occupants of a Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Berbice home.
The bandits, numbering about eight, later exchanged gunfire with police and a resident who attempted to apprehend them.
The victims were identified as Andy Anderson, 37, of Lot 15 ‘E’ Mibicuri South; Mohamed Ameer Salim; his wife, Bibi Shafora Subhratally, and the couple’s 16-year-old daughter Farina Salim. Mr. Salim was gun-butted during the 20-minute ordeal.
Anderson explained that the couple and their daughter are his neighbours and they were all at a house that he looks after for relatives who live overseas.
Bibi Shafora Subhratally told Kaieteur News that the family was in the yard when they heard someone running. They then saw a group of armed men in front of them.
The robbers then herded the family into the bottom flat, while ordering them to be quiet. She said that although they complied, the bandits began to beat them. They were then relieved of about $1M in cash and jewellery.
Andy Anderson was upstairs watching television and he realised that something was amiss when he heard Bibi Subhratally and her daughter screaming. He said that he was about to check on them from his verandah when three masked men, armed with shotguns and ‘a long gun’ ran upstairs and attacked him. He said that the robbers struck him in his head and stomach while ordering him to hand over some $1M in money and jewellery.
After he complied, the bandits dragged him down the stairs. He then saw his neighbours lying on the floor while three other masked men were ransacking the bottom flat of the home. Two men with guns stood guard in the yard.
Anderson said the bandits locked him in the bathroom after taking away his cellular phone.
After he was certain they were gone, he came out of the bathroom and saw his neighbour Mohamed Ameer Salim bleeding. The injured man had to be taken to the Mibicuri Hospital.
A neighbour, who is a licenced firearm holder, said that he alerted ranks at the Whim Police Station about the robbery but the bandits had already fled by the time they arrived.
The man claimed that while the police were at the scene he received word that the robbers were at another location. The businessman said he accompanied the ranks to the area, but as they were approaching the bandits opened fire, causing him and the ranks to respond.
The bandits eventually escaped.
