Team Coco’s Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey in a few short years has underlined his class as one of the best in Guyana when he rode to an emphatic win in the 2013 Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Road Race Championship yesterday.
Jeffrey, who was last year’s junior champion and on Saturday last won the Time Trials, sealed the double when he crossed the finish line yesterday on Homestretch Avenue in Three Hours 48 Minutes 40 Seconds to win the senior category almost two minutes ahead of the second placed, Alonzo Greaves (Roraima Bikers Club).
Greaves’ club mate, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay won a sprint home from Walter Grant-Stuart (unattached); Christopher Holder, Jude Bentley and last year’s winner Orville Hinds placed 5th to 7th.
The distance of 100 Miles (Homestretch Avenue to Soweto & back) attracted 26 senior starters but only nine (9) completed the distance in overcast conditions.
New Queen of the road, Continental Cycle Club’s Naiomi Singh rode brilliantly to upstage England based and former champion, Claire Fraser who also celebrated her birthday yesterday.
Singh, who like Jeffery, crossed the line way ahead of the opposition, completed the distance (Homestretch Avenue to Kuru Kururu & back) in Two Hours 25 Minutes. Fraser had to settle for the 3rd place behind Linden Bauxite Flyer Cycle Club’s Hazina Barrett who out-dueled Fraser in an exciting sprint.
There was no surprise when another emerging star, Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club rider Michael Anthony also copped the double having won the Time Trails a day earlier. Anthony stopped the clock at Two Hours 25 Minutes 36 Seconds outsmarting club mate Shaquel Agard.
Hamza Eastman of Flying Star Cycle Club had to settle for the third place, the juniors covered a distance of 60 miles (Homestretch Avenue to Long Creek & back).
Junior Niles again repeated as champion, this time of the Under-45 category; the GCF this year implementing for the first time, the Over-45 class.
Niles, also of Team Coco’s, took the gold medal in Two Hours 53 Minutes. Taking the silver medal was Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club’s Ralph Williams with Flying Ace Cycle Club (Berbice) member Syborne Fernandes settling for the bronze.
There was some amount of confusion and lack of race officials to guide the veterans, especially at the turn back point. This lapse which the GCF President Ms. Cheryl Thompson apologised for resulted in the riders putting in more miles than they should have.
Emerging as the winner was Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson (Flying Stars Cycle Club) who out hustled Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton (Roraima Bikers Club) and Gary Benjamin (Flying Ace Cycle Club) in that order.
Newton and Kennard Lovell vehemently voiced their dissatisfaction at the manner in which the GCF dealt with the race especially the veterans, noting that they had to expend extra energy due to the lack of guidance at the turn back point.
While Thompson apologised to the riders, she was adamant that all the competitors should have also been familiar with the turn back point pointing out that the information was published in the daily newspapers apart from being circulated to all the clubs.
Ms. Thompson did state that efforts will be made in future to have adequate road marshals, neutral time keepers as the GCF aim to take the event to another level.
Some cyclists were also disgruntled that the Championship Jersey’s were not available for distribution yesterday. Thompson informed that there was a mix up with the shipment of same and it will be handed over at a subsequent date.
The first to third place finishers at the Time Trials and yesterday’s Road Race were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals.
