After a keen tussle where both teams enjoyed glorious moments, Charlestown Secondary School emerged victorious by a 2-1 margin over Mercy Wings when the action in the Digicel U-18 School Football Championships continued at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Ground, Carifesta Avenue, yesterday afternoon.
Shane Morris (21st) and Omari James (78th) were on target for the winners with Leslie Holligan scoring Mercy Wing’s lone goal in the 40th minute.
Charlestown looked ominous from the first whistle as both teams defied the muddy conditions caused by overnight and early morning rains. The battle for possession turned nasty when Orandel Noel intercepted dangerously and brought Morris down in the box. The referee promptly issued a yellow card and awarded a penalty to the affected player who duly converted.
The intense battle continued even amidst much slipping and sliding as the players bravely battled the adverse conditions. Holligan eventually broke through but had to contend with an advancing Charlestown custodian. The Mercy Wings striker kept his composure and adroitly steered the ball around the right of the advancing ‘keeper’ and gently tapped in the ball to equalize the situation.
James was the thorn in Mercy Wings side and he almost broke the deadlock shortly after Holligan’s success with a classical header that Omari Jones snatched out of the air. Jones’ feats between the upright were especially commendable and he earned plaudits from the spectators after several outstanding saves.
His superb goalkeeping skills averted many a goal but try as he might he could not stave off a ferocious kick off the boot of Omari James mere minutes to the final whistle. The Mercy Wings players then launched a late attack in an effort to bring the situation back to equilibrium but the Charlestown players fought back and maintained their slim lead.
Jones was to enjoy a final moment in the sun when he held on to a fierce kick from one of the opposition’s strikers simultaneously with the whistle. The Mercy Wings lost the match but their keeper, Omari Jones was the unsound hero.
Meanwhile, Bishop’s High gained a walkover from Princeton School in their scheduled match at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary yesterday.
