The tag of National Champion and bragging rights apart from the Championship jersey’s and medals are at stake when the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) brings off the 2013 edition of the National Championships tomorrow and Sunday.
For the second year running, the Time Trials are set for the Linden Soesdyke Highway where the hilly terrain will again test the ability of the nation’s best.
The route will be from Madewini (hill after Splashmin’s Resort) to where the First Toll was and back to the place of origin. The first rider will be timed from 14:00hrs but riders are expected to be at the venue one hour before the start.
Unlike last year when the Road Race started and ended in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden for the first time, the GCF has made some adjustments this year which will see the Road Race commencing and finishing in the capital city.
Cyclists are required to be at the Homestretch Avenue starting point at 06:00hrs on Sunday morning for registration with the starters flag set to be waved one hour later, 07:00hrs.
Senior competitors will battle all the way to Soweto on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning to the starting point for what is anticipated to be an exciting finish. Defending champion Orville Hinds of the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club has endured a tough time ever since his win last year.
Hinds will be hoping for another extraordinary ride on Sunday in order to retain his title but will have to contend with the likes of Raynauth Jeffrey, Robin Persaud and Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, among others.
A new junior champion will be crowned as last year’s winner; Raynauth Jeffrey has graduated to the senior ranks. Raul Leal would have been one of the serious contenders but is still bed ridden after being involved in an accident over one month ago.
The Linden riders will be strong contenders to win this category with Michael Anthony leading in this regard. Shaquel Agard and Akeem Arthur will also be staking their claim to win the junior crown.
England based female rider, Claire Fraser is expected to be here to defend her title and will be tested by Hazina Barrett, Naiome Singh and Marica Dick who will all fancy their chances of being the number female.
Junior Niles will start as favourite to retain the Under-50 title while the Over-50 competitors will for the first time be able to battle for their own champion as the GCF has now instituted this category according to President, Cheryl Thompson.
Junior riders will turn back at Long Creek while the veterans and females will turn back at Kuru Kururu.
Cyclists are reminded that they must produce their 2013 licenses at the point of registration for both events and must also be attired in their clubs uniforms. Only riders registered with the GCF will be allowed to compete.
