A five wicket haul from pacer Romario Shepard followed by half centuries from Devin Baldeo and Akshay Homraj enabled Berbice to grab first innings points from Essequibo when the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire and Life General Insurance Company (GTM) 3 day inter county tournament commenced yesterday.
At stumps, Berbice are 199-3 after facing 55 overs with David Latchaya on 36 and Gudakesh Motie Kanhai yet to score; leading by 85 runs.
Berbice won the toss and inserted Essequibo who once again crumbled after a decent start and were bowled out for 114 in 38.5 overs. They were off to a flier as Ricardo Peters and Avinash Persaud put together 26 for the opening stand before Persaud attempted to cut a delivery too close to his body and was taken at second slip off Shepard for 19(2×4 1×6) in the 7th over. Ricardo Adams came in at 3 and got off the mark with a boundary off Shepard in the said over. Shepard responded with a short pitched delivery which disappeared over mid wicket for a maximum. Peters then straight drove off spinner David Latchaya who opened the bowling for a six and a four in the next over as Essequibo looked set for a respectable total.
Adams was then leg before to leg spinner Shawn Pereira for 27 (2×4 1×6) at 66-2. It then became 66-3 when Peters was caught and bowled by Shailendra Shameer for 15 (1×4 1×6). Mark Gonsalves and Andy Dass added 14 for the fourth wicket before Dass (04) was taken on the long off boundary off Shameer to leave Essequibo in trouble at 80-4. Gonsalves and Rajiv Balgobin tried to steady the innings with a 23 run fifth wicket stand, but just as they appeared to bat their team out of danger, Balgobin (10) attempted to work a delivery on the onside and was bowled by left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai at 103-5.
Shepard was reintroduced into the attack and had success almost immediately when he bowled Gonsalves who stroked two fours and a similar number of sixes for 25 at 105-6.
Perreira then had Julio Jones (03) stumped before Shepard removed Mahindra Balbadar (02), Hassan Mohamed (00) and Gracie Vanslyman (00) as Essequibo lost their last 5 wickets for 11 runs. Shepard finished with 5-27 from 8.8 overs while Shameer had 2-11, Perreira 2-23 and Kanhai 1-11.
Berbice were off to a solid start with Devin Baldeo and Akshay Homraj adding 82 for the first wicket. The duo wasted little time in dispatching the bad balls and rotated the strike admirably. Homraj drove Hassan Mohamed to long leg before flicking him through mid wicket for boundaries.
He then glanced Rajiv Balgobin through square leg before left arm spinner Herry Green had him caught for 51 (6×4 2×6). Baldeo and Sharaz Ramcharran continued to frustrate the opposition with sensible batting, taking the score to 149. Green who bowled with good control, loop and variation sent Baldeo packing for 71 (10×4).
Ramcharran and David Latchaya added a further 50 for the third wicket before Ricardo Adams trapped Ramcharran leg before for 26 on the stroke of time. Green has so far taken 2-69 and Adams 1-23. The game continues today at 10:00hrs.
