Team back Circle, Guyana’s representative at the Guinness Caribbean ‘Street Football Challenge’ Competition which is slated to be played from today to Sunday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines departed and arrived yesterday in the Eastern Caribbean territory.
Back Circle, who lost in the finals of the inaugural tournament which was hosted in Guyana last year, shortly before they departed expressed confidence of bringing back the title to Guyana and called on all Guyanese to rally around them as they seek to return glory to this country.
Guyana will be competing against the respective winners of seven other countries including host St. Vincent & the Grenadines for prize monies in excess of US$7,000.
The other countries that will be participating are: defending champions St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua/Barbuda, St, Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and newcomers Grenada, Dominica, and St. Kitts/Nevis.
The team will be captained by veteran street footballer Wayne Wilson and includes six players from last year’s regional championship.
The other team members are prolific midfield player Philip Rowley, who plays at the first division level for BK Western Tigers, sturdy defender Devon Harris, who represents the Guyana Defence Force in local competition, Daniel Favorite, another member of the Western Tigers Team, instrumental striker Andy Duke, experienced street footballer Vincent Thomas and veteran defender Seon McKenzie, a former first division player for Santos FC, and newcomer to the team.
The winning team carts off US$4,000, runner-up US$2,000 and 3rd place US$1,000. In addition the players and Coach or Manager will be presented with the opportunity to earn official coaching qualification. The coaching programme will be held in conjunction with the Jamaican Football Federation and will cover all aspects of football coaching, from drills and skills to nutrition and sports psychology.
It is Advanced Level 1 recognized by CONCACAF and FIFA. The course is aimed at future coaches who want to upgrade and enhance their coaching skills and make coaching a career choice.
The inaugural Guinness Skills Challenge champion will also receive US $1,000.
Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste also accompanied the team.
