The rescheduled Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire & Life Insurance Company (GTM) inter county U-19 Inter-County Three-Day Competition is set to commence today with two games. The tournament started in May but was pushed back due to the inclement weather. The 50 over version of the competition will commence on July 3.
The tournament, which will be played on a round-robin basis, is expected to be keenly contested. Two matches will be played simultaneously in each Round.
In the opening fixture, President’s XI will take on Berbice at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary, while the Essequibo, who won the limited overs version in 2012, will go up against Demerara at Everest.
With the likes of skipper Akasha Persaud, Ryan Shun, Martin Pestano Bell, Rajiv Balgobin and Denesh Mangal included, the President’s XI should be able to post decent scores; however it will be exciting to see how they handle the Berbice bowling attack, which will be spearheaded by their captain Shawn Pereira, Dereck Narine and left arm spinner Gudakesh Moti Kanhai. President’s XI Left arm pacer Asif Ilahi performed well in the recently concluded Demerara Cricket Board inter association tournament and is expected to lead their bowling attack with support from Nail Smith, Akash Jagroo and Shun. Berbice batting line up will be led by Nick Ramsaroop, Devin Baldeo and Parmanand Narine.
While Demerara captain is yet to be decided, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who recently returned from a successful stint in England, Brian Sattaur, Kamesh Yadram, Andrew Gibson and Kemol Savory will spearhead their batting department. Dexter George and Bernard Bailey are likely to share the new ball while spinners Steven Sankar and Devon Lord will look to put their names on the national selectors list.
One of the batsmen to watch in this competition is Essequibo captain Ricardo Adams. The exciting left hander is capable of holding his own in any given situation at this level, and with Ricardo Peters, Mark Gonsalves and Shivindra Hemraj included, their batting seems rock solid. Left arm spinner Herry Green, pacer Hassan Mohamed and Adams will lead their bowling department.
The teams will come from, President’s XI; Akasha Persaud (Captain), Ryan Shun, Rajiv Balgobin, Asif Ilahi, Danesh Mangal, Anthony Bopdeo, Martin Pestano-Bell, Yekinie Favourite, Arif Chand, Hakeem Hinds, Nial Smith, Devon George, Keano Harry and Akash Jagroo.
