Residents of St. Cuthbert’s Mission in Region Four (Mahaica/Berbice) have been assured that the 12-mile road to access the Mission from the Soesdyke- Linden Highway will soon be repaired and upgraded.
A source from the Mission said that the assurance had been obtained from the Ministry of Works and Hydraulics following a formal complaint by the village about the deteriorating state of the road.
A spokesman said that the villagers were happy about the assurances given, but would be even happier if the assistance is forthcoming very quickly since the road is becoming almost impassable at some parts.
He said that as at yesterday, there were four sections of the road that had been washed away by erosion caused by heavy rainfall making the movement of vehicles difficult.
St. Cuthbert’s Mission is located 65 miles up the Mahaica River.
The only other way to access the village other than this road is by travelling from Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara by boat a journey which takes several hours.
The 12-mile road from the Soesdyke-Linden Highway makes a trip to Georgetown possible in one and a half to two hours.
Central Government built the road on an existing trail in 2009 much to the relief of residents, but according to the spokesman there had not been any regular programme of maintenance since then.
