Boat owners of diesel operated fishing vessels have accepted a proposal to access cheap diesel from the Guyana Trawler Owners’ Association under a well monitored and regulated system involving the Co-operative Society and authorities.
This unanimous decision was made following a meeting between fishermen, Mohamed Khan, Chairman of Greater Georgetown Fishermen’s Co-operative Society, and Denzil Roberts, Chief Fisheries Officer of Agriculture Ministry’s Fisheries Department yesterday at the Meadow Bank Wharf.
The proposal limited to only diesel operated boats presented by Khan, was based on discussions he had with members of the Guyana Trawler Owners’ Association on Thursday. Apparently, when the proposal is proven successful only then would gasoline operated vessels stand to benefit.
Khan said that the Trawler Owners’ Association would supply the Co-operative Society with fuel marked by Customs. The fuel would be sold to fishing vessels and the entire management of the fuel would be executed by the Guyana Energy Agency and the Guyana Revenue Authority.
He noted that fishing vessels that are blacklisted would not be able to access the cheap fuel which would possibly be over $700. Khan said that trawlers are not paying the low sum of $600 per gallon fuel but not more than $700.
To benefit from the cheap fuel the boat owners need to register their vessels, certificate of sea worthiness and registration with the organization, he added.
But, according to a fisherman, boats that are blacklisted should be given a chance to benefit from this new development in the industry.
While informing this initiative to fishermen, Khan emphasized the harsh reality that some activities on the wharf are illegal. He said that the illegal sale of fuel, presence of illicit substances and contraband goods need to stop.
According to Roberts, he has crafted a proposal with the pointers given to him by fishermen earlier this week, following protest actions against high fuel cost which is over 50 percent of the entire expense to send a vessel out to sea.
He suggested that fishermen accept the agreement between the Society and the Trawler Owners’ Association since the other proposal has several loopholes.
