Businessman Clinton Urling is to challenge incumbent Ronald Webster, for the post of Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), after the body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), later this month.
Urling, whose family runs the popular German Restaurant, is the current President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce of Industry (GCCI).
In announcing Urling’s candidature, the GCCI said elections are set for the first Council meeting after the PSC’s AGM on June 25, 2013.
“Over the past year and under Urling’s leadership, the Georgetown Chamber has introduced a number of changes and initiatives that have resulted in enormous value for its private sector members and the wider society as a whole. The Chamber has also maintained good cordial relationships with important policy and civil society stakeholders.”
The GCCI said that Urling intends to bring that same level of leadership to the PSC by working with its membership and other stakeholders to ensure a stable social and economic environment for businesses to succeed.
Webster is a longstanding senior executive at the Caribbean Containers Inc., a paper recycling operation at Farm, East Bank Demerara. He was also a former Chairman of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
The Private Sector Commission was established in 1992, by a number of associations and business entities, and is governed by a council comprising heads of all members of the sectoral organizations and a number of elected members. The Council is headed by a Chairman who can serve a maximum of two consecutive one-year terms. Any Chairman who has served two consecutive terms may be eligible for subsequent re-election.
There are 40 corporate and sectoral members of the PSC, which is one of the leading business advocacy groups in Guyana.
