Police have detained a Mon Repos Market vendor as they probe a suspected case of arson, which saw the lower flat of a Lusignan, East Coast Demerara house being torched last Friday.
The suspect, Rajesh Ramcharan of Lot 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara reportedly set fire to a house located at Lot 36 Section “C” Lusignan at around dawn, on Friday last. He was taken into custody several hours after the incident.
The house belonged to Parmanand and his wife Rajwantie Chakurdeen, who lived with their three sons.
Kaieteur News understands that the incident reportedly stems from an ongoing feud between Ramcharan and the family.
“We does sell at Mon Repos market and this man always does threaten we, he does sell too and he got one problem wid we. He does threaten to burn awe house an kill awe and so,” Chakurdeen said.
She said that several reports about the suspect’s behavior had been lodged at various Police Stations on the East Coast of Demerara.
She recalled that early Friday morning, “we went sleeping but the smoke mek we wake up and meh husband jump off de bed and run downstairs. He see the fire but same time we hear the gate and he see the man (Ramcharan) leffing de yard.”
Chakurdeen told this newspaper that the quick response of neighbours, who organised a bucket brigade aided in extinguishing the blaze before it spread to the upper flat of the house.
The woman said that her husband subsequently went to the Vigilance Police Station.
Meanwhile the suspected arsonist made good his escape but was apprehended by the officers at Vigilance Police Station after he went there to make a report about one of Chakurdeen’s sons assaulting him.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect was subsequently released on bail with instructions to report to the station today to facilitate further investigations.
Chakurdeen could not ascertain her losses.
