This was the claim of Wayne Parker, a minibus conductor from Linden, as he sought to explain the reasons for his unlawful actions after pleading guilty to charges of robbery with violence and escape from lawful custody.
He faced Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court yesterday.
Court documents revealed that on Saturday June 2, Parker robbed Ashley Marques of her purse, cell phone and other personal belongings. At the time of the robbery, the defendant reportedly used violence against the plaintiff.
The incident occurred on the southern side of Regent Street, near King Street. The virtual complainant reported that the defendant dragged her by the neck around the corner, into King Street. “He told me that I disrespectful and pulled away my purse, cell phone and ran off.” Parker was arrested some time later by police ranks on mobile patrol. The officers later discovered while booking the man for robbery that he had been a fugitive of the law since April. The court learnt that on April 2, last, while being an inmate of the Camp Street Prison, Parker escaped from the custody of law enforcement ranks.
The defendant escaped after he was taken back to the Camp Street facility following an appearance in court. The court further learnt that Parker had served a three year prison sentence on a charge of unlawful wounding.
After hearing the case, Magistrate Beharry sentenced Parker to four years imprisonment.
