Not having functional toilets at the Leonora Cottage Hospital is an embarrassment, according to the Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, yesterday.
The Minister explained that the issue concerning the physical infrastructure at the hospital is not a concern of his Ministry but that of the Region Three authorities. However, he promised to work closely with the regional officials to have these problems rectified as soon as possible.
Speaking on the issue surrounding the storage of a 28-week-old still-born baby in the nurses’ fridge, he said that investigations are ongoing.
Dr. Ramsaran said that the facility only does emergency delivery and as is customary, the baby (be it dead or alive) will be transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital with its mother.
However, that was not the case three Wednesdays ago when the mother was transferred to the West Demerara Hospital while her still-born baby was placed in a black plastic bag and stored in the freezing compartment of a fridge that is used by staffers to store their eatables.
The Minister promised to launch a thorough investigation. He said that a team from his Ministry visited the hospital on Tuesday and did an inspection.
When asked about the envelopes that the staffers claimed they have to make to put tablets, the Minister stated that the hospital has to make a requisition from the central bond in Diamond. He also said that there should not be a shortage of medical items at hospitals because the Ministry has been spending more and more money each year.
Two days ago, this publication reported that employees at the health institute were complaining that the body of a still-born baby boy was stored in the fridge they used to store their eatables.
Apart from the storage of the dead infant, they claimed that there are no functional toilets for both patients and staff and that there is a shortage of critical drugs at the pharmacy.
The workers stressed that the hospital started deteriorating since last June.
