Fresh from decent performances at the West Indies Fullbore Rifle Shooting Championships held at the Paragon Ranges in Bridgetown, Barbados – May 11-19, 2013 – Guyana’s marksmen are now turning their scopes and aiming to fly the Golden Arrowhead in the United Kingdom at two prestigious competitions in July.
National Captain Mahendra Persaud, Reigning Caribbean Individual King Lennox Braithwaite and current National Individual Champion Ransford Goodluck are seeking to represent Guyana at the 144th Imperial Meeting to be hosted by the National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom (NRA) and the Commonwealth Shooting Federation (CSF) Championships both to be held in July.
Guyana successfully retained the Long Range (Team) and Individual West Indies Championships in Barbados and narrowly lost the Short Range trophy to Jamaica, having previously held all the hardware.
The loss of the Short Range trophy to their rivals from Reggae Island will see the Guyana National Rifle Association instituting a number of pertinent changes to ensure that there is more depth on the Guyana team going forward.
It is the lack of depth that the Jamaicans capitalized on to wrest the Short Range title from Guyana; the Guyanese have however vowed to regain same when the Jamaicans host the 2014 edition of the West Indies Championships.
But for now, National Captain Persaud says that attention will be on ensuring that Braithwaite, Goodluck and himself compete at the NRA and CSF competitions at Bisley. He said that a number of business entities have been approached to contribute towards the trio’s participation.
The Imperial Meeting (July 11-20, 2013) is the most prestigious of the competitions held by the National Rifle Association (NRA). This year marks the 144th occasion the competitions will be held since the first at Wimbledon.
The series of competitions includes competitions for Service Rifle, Civilian Service Rifle, Cadets, Historic Arms, Schools, Gallery Rifle and Pistol, Match Rifle and Target Rifle.
The Meeting opens with the Service Rifle Competitions where forces and countries from across the world compete in competitions including the Queen’s Medal. On the Final Saturday Target Rifle competitors who have made it to HM the Queen’s Prize third stage (no mean feat as only 100 qualify from over 1000 in the first stage), shoot at 900 and 1000 yards. The winner is chaired off the range and onto Prize Giving.
The Commonwealth Shooting Federation (CSF) Championships would normally be held at the Games Venue in the year preceding the Games (2014 Commonwealth Games, officially the XX Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, United Kingdom from 23 July to 3 August 2014).
However, the military Range at Barry Budden will not be made available until shortly before the Games themselves. Hence, the CSF has decided to hold a Fullbore Championship at Bisley immediately following the 2013 NRA Imperial Meeting, July 22-24.
Persaud is of the view that these two championships are necessary for the Guyanese top shots since from the three representatives, the 2-man Guyana team for next year’s Commonwealth Games will be selected.
Guyana will participate in the Individual and Pairs competitions at the Commonwealth Games. At the previous Games held in India, Guyana placed 5th overall, just a few points off the bronze medal.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
