Challenges within several health facilities between Plaisance and Hope, East Coast Demerara, could have been avoided if the Ministry of Health had done regular maintenance and ensured adequate staffing.
This notion was expressed by several nurses, who over the years witnessed the deterioration of the Dr. C.C. Nicholson Memorial Hospital and several health centres along the Coast, including Victoria
Health Centre.
According to one nurse, each facility has its own problems that could be resolved but no timely interventions are being made. At almost every monthly meeting convened by the Regional Health Officer, nurses raise numerous challenges they encounter but the situation remains the same, the nurse said.
The nurse related that the Dr. C.C. Nicholson Memorial Hospital, which is supposed to provide 24 hours healthcare, is not operating to its full capacity owing to its poor condition and inadequate staffing.
“This hospital used to work on a 24-hour basis but because of poor lighting through the street, absence of windows at the hospital and shortage of staff, it now operates mostly during the day. We used to do deliveries but for some time now we stop deliveries because most times its just two staff working,” the nurse related.
Previously, the hospital was staffed with a doctor and medic but about two years ago the medic was removed and the Ministry never appointed a replacement. That move considerably reduced the strength of the hospital.
The nurse said that sometimes staffers are subjected to verbal abuse by patients who believe that they are purposefully withholding services. However, some nurses could only provide triage care for patients and in emergency cases, make referrals to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Now that the Ministry has transferred Dr. Ameeka Breedy, who was stationed at the hospital and provided services to health centres from Haslington to Hope, nurses are worried that health services in the communities will further decline.
In addition, there will be a strain on the already limited human resources available within the district. It was noted that some nurses are already working extra hours and day-offs to help cover the slacks.
According to the nurse, the neighbouring Victoria Health Centre is one of the most troubled health facilities within the stretch. The centre does not have a proper storage cupboard; as such medications are stored at the Dr. C.C. Nicholson Memorial Hospital and are transported to the centre on clinic days.
In addition, patients’ washrooms are non-functional and so the nurses have to share their washroom with patients. And, the landline telephone has not been operational for about three years.
