The Brydens Super Classic Indoor Hockey Championships will launch the local indoor hockey season tomorrow from noon at the National Gymnasium.
Four teams will vie for top honours in the men’s first division championships where last year’s MVP Devin Munroe and his defending Champions, the Pepsi Hikers, will be hard-pressed to retain the trophy. Tony Cole and Chris Low-Koan will once again lead a strong Old Fort attack which features new and exciting players such as Omar Hopkinson and Onasis Fraser. Bounty GCC’s challenge will once again be spearheaded by Captain Devin Hooper and defensive stalwart Dwayne Scott along with the entertaining ball-handlers Kevin Spencer and Orland Semple. The Western Union Cadets however will be the team to watch as their exciting brand of hockey is sure to create a few upsets among the more seasoned sides with Shaquille Assanah and Aroydy Branford displaying their hockey wizardry.
Flora GCC Tigers enter the ladies competition as huge favourites having dominated the local indoor scene for the past five years. The emergence of young talents like Marzana Fiedtkou and Aliyah Gordon will ensure solid support to stalwarts Ulrica Sutherland and Tiffany Solomon. Hikers Divas are always contenders in the final and will no doubt be rejuvenated by the return of national striker Janella Munroe who joins Marisha Rodrigues and Maria Munroe to form a formidable side.
Spice will be a team to watch as national goalkeeper Alysa Xavier boasts the best record in women’s hockey when it comes to victories and personal accolades. She is joined by national midfielders Trisha Woodroffe and Sonia Jardine and tenacious young striker Samantha Fernandes. Revelation rounds out the women’s pool with a fast-improving bunch of enthusiastic players. Roshelle Mathias and Latacia Chung are sure to keep this young side in contention.
The men’s second division rounds out the list of competitions with the six-team competition seeing two new additions in All Greys and Ol’ Skool. Although the Hikers, GCC and Old Fort being the perennial favourites, the newly formed Saints Hockey Club has been gaining experience and making ground. 2012 Most Promising Player Leroy Jack and Yonnick Peters continue to impress spectators with their game, while the diminutive Hilton Chester has mastered the art of goal scoring. Azad DeAbreu and Brian Asregado will lead the charge for All Greys with Damon Woodroffe and Marcus Fiedtkou doing the same for Ol’ Skool. The two sides feature a number of former national players and are likely to prove very difficult to beat.
Matches begin at noon tomorrow with Saints challenging Old Fort and Hikers facing GCC in the second division competition. Matches run until 20:30hrs and will continue during the week with the three finals being scheduled for Sunday June 2nd from 18:00hrs.
