…accused jailed for 66 months
One man yesterday proved the saying “the longest rope has an end” to be true after he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment some seven years after he doused his then neighbor with acid.
Magistrate Sueanna Lovell yesterday handed down her sentence to 33-year-old Mortimer Hyman. On July 11, last year, Hyman was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Ron Robin after being on the run for some seven years.
It is alleged that on May 8, 2005, Hyman doused Robin with a corrosive substance causing him to be badly disfigured. Hyman was also charged with assaulting Robin’s wife, Melissa Rogers. Initially, Hyman pleaded not guilty to both charges and the Police Prosecutor, Alexis David-Hashanah objected to bail on the grounds that the accused may not return for his trial having been on the run for more than seven years. The court’s attention was also drawn to the seriousness of the offence.
Robin’s wife was in front of their Sussex Street Home sweeping when her husband requested that she stop as her attire was not fitting to be in public. The court was told that Robin then took over from his wife and just as he bent over to start sweeping Hyman threw a liquid on him. Robin started screaming and quickly jumped into a car and went to the Georgetown Public Hospital. By that time Robin’s wife ventured outside to see what was going on and she too was attacked during an attempt to stop her husband’s attacker from fleeing.
That was the last time Hyman was seen, but the matter was reported to the police and subsequently left cold for some time.
Prosecutor David Hassanah said that it was only on June 30, 2012 that a police mobile patrol which was familiar with the accused saw him and arrested him. However throughout the trial which lasted for some ten months it was not an easy case for the prosecution as a medical certificate was never uplifted by the investigating rank at the time.
Eventually, one was obtained from the Georgetown Public Hospital’s records department and was tendered in court. After the somewhat lengthy trial the Magistrate yesterday informed the accused that there was enough evidence to prove that he was guilty of the act.
When asked if he had anything to say before his sentence was handed down, Hyman merely said “Your worship this man use to torment me family all the time and I asking you to be lenient with me.”
In response the Magistrate then told the accused that he should be thankful that she is only allowed to give him a maximum of five years’ imprisonment.
Further Hyman will serve another six months imprisonment having been found guilty of assaulting Robin’s wife.
