Dear Editor,
After a boat which business people were forced to ship goods on for the North West allegedly suffered some difficulties at sea, Minister Robeson Benn travelled to Mabaruma with a team of Government Officials to keep meetings with citizens.
The Minister told the poor people that a new boat would be put on the North West run within 18 months. An earlier report in the press had mentioned that the MV Kimbia would be up and running SOON.
Question for the Minister – How soon would the engineers be able to cap that gaping hole in the MV Kimbia?
When the PPP was campaigning for the 1992 election, Mr. Harripersaud Nokta said that should the Party win, the North West would get a new steamer. Twenty years on, our eyes are still ‘skinning’ on the horizon. We see no sails but we hear more empty promises.
Several meetings were held in the Mabaruma Sub Region. We heard big Ministers telling us that we saved the day for them at the last election and that they look forward to our continued support in new elections. Laughable – we are now ready to support ourselves – we have had enough of corruption, poor roads, only five hours electricity, shoddy work at our waterfront and more.
It is disgusting to see teams of Government officials travelling to and fro, and our social and economic plights are worsening. Our children have no proper schools. Classes for the secondary school are now being conducted in the Church’s Parish Hall. The Secondary school should have been completed a long time ago.
The Government must seriously think about which functionaries would make sense on these trips. Sorry, but none of the last crew impressed. Check the attendance at the meetings. There were more people when they went back for dinner at the Guest House. Disgusted Guyanese
