“I walked with elegance and gait, I spoke fluently and intellectually. I also performed my talent with hype and character, and made phenomenal relationships with my fellow contestants and showed respect to them along with their national directors.” – Katherina Roshana

At this year’s Miss India Worldwide 2013 pageant, held late last month in Malaysia, Guyana was represented admirably by the stunning Katherina Roshana.
Although she did not win, and was not placed in the top ten, the 23-year-old, who studied Oriental Medicines, said that she did her best in positively representing her country, and did not believe that she erred in any way. The well-spoken beauty copped the title of ‘Miss Beautiful Skin’.
The elder daughter of businessman Roshan Khan said that she is confident that she not only nailed her introduction, but also perfected the other segments of the competition (Talent, Indian Dress, and Evening Wear).
“I walked with elegance and gait, I spoke fluently and intellectually. I also performed my talent with hype and character, and made phenomenal relationships with my fellow contestants and showed respect to them along with their national directors,” the confident Miss India Guyana 2013 recounted.
The young lady added that even after the pageant, she did not receive any negative response.
“I’ve been open to critique from day one, and even after the pageant I wasn’t told of one flaw. I still am open to hearing anyone’s opinion on my performance, but based on how happy and proud I made the local supporters present in Malaysia that night, it’s tough to believe I erred at all.”
Katherina, fondly addressed as ‘Kate’, recalled looking into the audience only to find the majority of the persons there hoisting the Golden Arrowhead.
“I believe our country had the most local supporters present at the event – in total it was close to 40 Guyanese. But there were other guests from Malaysia itself, and from other countries, that were rooting for me/Guyana that night.”
Boiling down to the final night of the competition (April 27), Katherina said that she was believable relaxed, as she felt tremendously prepared for all the tasks that she had to undertake. She described the stage that night as being ‘home’.
Katherina said that the words – pumped, eager, fervent, and zealous – are all expressions that could fittingly describe her emotions on the night of the competition.
“My adrenaline was pumping backstage. I was so eager to represent my country, Guyana!”
When it came to last-minute preparations, Katherina said she had none, as all her rehearsals were completed and fully memorized before departing Guyana.
“My team and I had already covered what we needed to before we would have landed in Malaysia, and the late nights were spent perfecting my talent so that I could put forward an excellent performance.”
Katherina recalled the late night rehearsals which would continue into the wee hours of the morning, with her National Director, Chandini Ramnarine and team, who ensured that her talent piece, a dramatic dance, was “perfected”.
“Their focus is immense and I applaud them on that…little do they know, they have contributed to making me an even better individual.”
The Barbizon Modeling School graduate expressed sincere gratitude to Mrs. Collette Chin-Jones who taught her everything she needed to know about drama. Katherina said that the knowledge gained from time spent with the Director of Drama enabled her to further appreciate the field.
“I thank everyone who has worked with me. It takes sacrifice to produce something phenomenal. I admire each and every one of these individuals for having faith in me and for working at all costs to ensure I make Guyana proud”.
Meanwhile, Katherina noted that she admired her immediate predecessor Alana Seebarran, Guyana’s first International crown holder, and Miss India Worldwide 2012, but her source of inspiration came from Miss India Guyana 2011, Roshini Budhoo, who copped a Miss Congeniality title.
“Alana is very beautiful and has a great welcoming presence, but the one person I was looking up to this entire time was Roshini Budhoo, Miss India Guyana 2011. She may not have brought home the international crown, but she sure acted like she did. She never let it affect her, she continued to contribute to Guyana in whatever ways she could, and that has inspired me deeply. Throughout my entire journey over the past few months, Roshini would continuously check in on me and reassure me that I could fall on her for any sort of help – and I am so thankful for this.”
When asked whether she was disappointed about Alana Seebarran not being able to be there as an ambassador to Guyana, Katherina replied, “it was definitely unfortunate that Alana could not be there.”
She said she was disappointed with all of the controversy happening back home, and became even more disappointed when the organization in Malaysia found out about it, but did not feel that it necessarily hurt her chances.
“I do not wish to say that it was aimed to affect me or that it affected me, but it might have had a negative impact on the mood of the entire pageant. Nonetheless, I remained extremely focused and well-prepared in all of my performances. And, quite frankly, I had a great time.”
Nonetheless, before heading off to Malaysia, Katherina said that the support from locals made her feel as though she had already won.
“I felt like I was going to Disneyland, because I never expected that much love and appreciation from Guyana.”
She explained that among all the fulfillments of her trip, the most valuable to her was the stronger bond that developed between her and her biggest fans and supporters, her parents.
