It is quite odd that anyone would hold on to a winning ticket for almost three months before claiming $78 million lottery prize. However, this was the case of 65-year old Chinese national, Hai Sang Wong. Wong nervously walked to Lotto Headquarters in Lamaha Street, Georgetown at 10:30 yesterday to claim his prize.
For several weeks the identity of the winner, who purchased the ticket on February 16, 2013 in Linden, had remained a mystery. The unclaimed multi-million-dollar jackpot lingered for weeks as Lotto officials placed several advertisements in the press.
The Lottery Company has been appealing to its customers asking that they check their tickets
The winning ticket holder was given up until May 17, 2013—three months– to claim the jackpot. Failing this; the money would have gone back into future lottery games.
Kaieteur News understands that yesterday Wong, who happens to be a logger and miner from Linden, entered the Lotto office, “opened his passport and took out a neatly placed ticket for the Supa six drawing dated Saturday February 16, 2013.
The ticket bore the numbers 06-08-11-13-18-25. The Bonus number is 28 and the Free Ticket letter is J.
Wong was claiming his prize 87 days after the draw, just two days before the deadline, as all lottery tickets have a 90-day redemption period. The 65-year-old Wong was very happy with his winning. He reportedly stated that he decided to take his time to collect his prize as “he didn’t have much time to come to the office.”
Since the launch of the Abrazo on October 31, 2011, this lotto “Supa Six” has been the highest. Mr. Wong says that he will “bank all of his winnings for the time being.”
The management and staff of the Guyana Lottery company extended best wishes to the new winner and said that it is glad that he claimed his winning just in time.
