Magistrate Sueanna Lovell has ruled that a prima facie has been made out against popular Television station owner of CNS Channel 6, C. N Sharma. Sharma was before the court yesterday on a charge of carnal knowledge.
When the case was first called before Acting Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Chandra Narine Sharma was refused bail. The charge read to him stated that between July 23, 2003 and July 23, 2004, he had carnal knowledge of a girl under seven years old.
Upon hearing the court’s decision, the proprietor collapsed and had to be taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The following day, the accused was granted bail in the sum of $2M.
Prosecuting the case for the state in its initial stages was the Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack who requested that the matter be heard in camera (in private) as she stressed upon the fact that the victim’s identity must be protected. The DPP further stated that she was very concerned with the prevalence of sexual abuse with regard to children.
Attorneys at law Nigel Hughes, Tanya Warren, Mark Waldron and the late Vic Puran stood in the defense of the carnal Knowledge accused.
During the Preliminary Inquiry some girls, aged 5, 9, 18, and 21 along with a cousin, aged 12, were interrogated by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department at Eve Leary. The girl, who is now 13, reported to the police that she and her sisters were repeatedly raped by Sharma who would give them $2000 per week after their sexual encounters. It was further alleged by the eldest sister that the popular television owner is the father of her child.
C.N. Sharma was also questioned at Eve Leary prior to his court hearing.
Human Services and Social Security also carried out investigations upon receiving the reports of the matter.
