First Lady Deolatchmee Ramotar, continuing the close relationship forged recently with the female prisoners of the New Amsterdam Prison, on Sunday treated them to a scrumptious Mother’s Day lunch at the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) Sports Club.
Also present at the proceedings were members of the N/A Prisons Visiting Committee and Region Six Vice- Chairman, Mr. Bhupaul Jhagroo.
While Mrs. Ramotar was unavoidably absent, her message was read by Former Region Five Chairman, Mr. Harrinarine Baldeo.
“I can only imagine how hard it must be for you to be incarcerated and separated especially on this special day from your children. I can also imagine that on this day, you will be reflecting on your lives and the various choices that you made. `
“These are all the very important and very good reflections to have, because as women and mothers understanding and learning from your past mistakes, you are able to make better and wiser choices, as you move ahead with your lives,” she said.
Mrs. Ramotar noted, too, that she believes that there are very important life lessons that the woman can teach their children and “motivating and focusing your children to become productive members of society as well as imparting to them how to deal with and overcome adversity.”
She added that the women are in positions to teach lessons and “I urge that you seize these opportunities and strive to influence your children and other young people you encounter, to choose the right path in life”.
Mrs. Ramotar urged the women to continue to be strong role model inmates and not to give up hope “Remember, it is never too late to start a new path and make your dreams come through, whatever those dreams may be”.
She then, through the message, extended Mother’s Day greetings on behalf, too, of the First Lady Foundation.
Officer-in-charge of the N/A Prisons and Assistant Senior Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Linden Cornett, praised the growing close relationship being fostered between Mrs. Ramotar and the female prisoners. “We take it in this stride that the First Lady’s Foundation is now a part of our prison system at New Amsterdam.”
He noted that within the past three months there have been contributions and visits from the First Lady who has taken time and effort to address issues at the prison.
Mr. Cornett praised the prison Strategic Plan in helping to better the prisons. He wished all the women a happy Mother’s Day and asked that the First Lady’s representatives convey best wishes to her as well.
After the speeches, the female prisoners recited several poems and sang. The male prisoners choir also sang songs for mothers, after which they were served lunch.
On International Women’s Day, Mrs. Ramotar visited and served the ladies lunch. She also made several donations that included a karaoke machine, TV and DVD and fans.
