– as mother continues quest for justice
The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has given the police the report on the April 10 beating death of Cuyuni miner, John Darwin McPherson. At the same time, the dead man’s relatives continue to press for justice.
An official from the DPP office told Kaieteur News that the report was given ‘due attention’ and returned to the police, but could not say whether the police have been advised to lay charges.
McPherson’s mother, Barbara James, has expressed concern that individuals identified by an eyewitness as McPherson’s attackers are still to be charged and that police had actually released the suspects.
Yesterday, Ms. James, accompanied by two other relatives, visited the DPP’s Kingston office and CID Headquarters, Eve Leary and was informed of the developments.
Ms. James told Kaieteur News last week that she had accompanied the alleged eyewitness to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, Eve Leary and that the man submitted a more detailed statement to ‘F’ Division ranks about the circumstances surrounding McPherson’s demise.
The eyewitness had given police at Bartica a previous statement and had also identified McPherson’s assailants.
McPherson, 25, of Plum Park, Sophia, died on April 10, after he was allegedly abducted, bound, beaten and repeatedly drenched at Oku Backdam, Cuyuni, by a group of men who had accused him of masterminding a robbery at their camp.
The beating was allegedly carried out on the orders of a dredge owner.
A death certificate viewed by Kaieteur News gave McPherson’s cause of death as asphyxiation. It also stated that he had compression injuries to the neck.
Kaieteur News was told that the dredge owner who ordered McPherson’s abduction had caught a miner from McPherson’s camp on his claim. The crewmen allegedly relieved the intruder of a firearm, and after being beaten and interrogated, the miner reportedly identified McPherson and two others as his accomplices.
At the time, McPherson was working on another dredge owner’s camp located some 15 minutes away.
