Favourites emerged as the winners when the curtains came down on the Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one
corporate sponsor Digicel National Junior Squash tournament sponsored by Woodpecker Products Ltd at the Georgetown Club Courts yesterday.
The final set of matches took place yesterday with several of the leading junior squash players in Guyana vying for the top places in their respective categories. The first category on the court was the Boys Under-11. After the dust had settled with each of the boys having to play thirteen matches, the winner in this category was Shomari Wiltshire, having not dropped a game against any of his opponents.
Shomari Wiltshire also had a classic of a match in his Boys Under-15 match up against Matthew Phang.
After having easily won the first game 11-1, Phang stormed back to take the second game 11-8, before Wiltshire again took the lead as he won the third game 11-6, but Phang was not going to give in easily and won the fourth game 11-8.
The two boys were playing excellent squash and the crowd settled down for an entertaining fifth game. Phang won the first four points, before Wiltshire reeled off the next five as they traded leads until Wiltshire moved to within one point of winning the match at 10-7.
Phang not intent on folding meekly responded by winning the next two points to trail 9-10, but Wiltshire too showed admirable tenacity and eventually wrapped up the match 11-9.
The leading two Under-19 girls Mary Fung-a-Fat and Ashley De Groot put on a fine display of squash.
On this occasion, however, it was not to be for DeGroot as she made several errors at crucial moments and Fung-a-Fat came out the victor in straight games 11-6, 11-8, 11-4.
Jason Ray Khalil made light work of Steven Xavier in his final Under-19 match, winning easily three games to nil.
