Dear Editor,
In an earlier letter I lamented on how we seemed to have lost a concern for our fellow human beings. Over the past weeks we have seen examples of this detachment particularly against our sisters and those without connections in high places.
Today I read of the case of Abickie Ferguson whom it is alleged to have caused the death of her stepfather on April 22, 2009. At this point let us not go into the merits of this case, save to state that for the news article, we may very well be on the side of this young woman. But I ask what sort of society do we have?. Here is a 17 year old schoolgirl held in jail for four years – The best years of her life, awaiting the pleasure of our justice system.
They say justice delayed is justice denied. Could not the Honourable Attorney General & Minister of Justice or some other functionary see that this and similar cases be dealt with swiftly.
Where are our religious and social leaders? What has four years behind bars done to this young person?.
Come on churches, come on our young female lawyers, and our intellectual and young graduates and professionals, this is a sister who needed your voice and attention.
In parliament we have a Minister of Human Services, a Minister of Youth, a Bishop, and a Minister of Religion. Where is the concern and compassion for Ms. Ferguson. Has anyone tried to ascertain the environment of that home in Plaisance.
God Please Graciously Help us!
