While most mothers were enjoying the day set aside to show appreciation, a woman suspected of being victim of postpartum depression seemed to be at her weakest, as she started a fire yesterday that destroyed the house she and other relatives occupied.
Residents of the Bamboo Drive, Meadowbrook area who spoke to Kaieteur News identified the woman as Nicola Gomes, a mother of seven, who was seen leaving the house shortly before it was engulfed in flames.
The destroyed house was owned by Ray Hinds who is in the interior.
The fire reportedly started some time after 14:00hrs. Neighbours who noticed the blaze, raised an alarm and residents responded quickly. Fortunately, no one was hurt. However, immediate neighbours suffered losses.
According to residents of the community, there was not much the firefighters could have done to save the house as when they arrived “it was already too late.” They however managed to contain the blaze to prevent it from affecting neighbouring houses.
Kaieteur News learnt that Gomes, believed to be in her mid 30’s, suffered a mental breakdown subsequent to the birth of her seventh child.
The children no longer lived with the woman. This newspaper understands that Gomes’s husband moved the children from the house a few months back after she kicked her seven month old baby. They now live with a cousin in the same area. The husband however, remained in the house with his wife.
Deon Croft, an immediate neighbour, expressed sympathy for what Gomes’ family was going through, while thanking God that her house was saved.
Residents broke louvres to enter Croft’s house and rescued her 20-year old disabled daughter.
Occupants of that house estimated that $300,000 worth of household items including clothing, mattresses, one wardrobe, television and DVD player suffered water damage.
Gomes was later arrested and is being held at the East La Penitence Police Station.
Residents in the community said that recently she was overheard lamenting over the fact that she hasn’t been in contact with her children.
One resident said, “she neva use to mix but she really change since she mek that last baby. De other day she stay just so and start running up the road; and nowadays she and de husband always at war, but recently she turned worse.”
This Newspaper understands that the woman’s mother comes and visits her often. There were plans made by her husband’s family to take her to the hospital but Gomes said she is not mad and her mother agreed.
