A drunken traffic policeman, who has been on the wrong side of the law recently, has found himself in more serious problems. He broke the said law that he had sworn to enforce and ended up being slapped with four charges. In fact, he appeared before the same Magistrate on successive days.
Amazingly, he opted to flout the decision of the court within minutes of leaving the court.
Lynel Campbell, of Cumberland Public Road, East Canje Berbice, was first charged on Sunday with driving motor car PRR 654 on the Cumberland Public Road, East Canje, Berbice when his alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit.
He appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty. The policeman stated that he was sorry and was fined $20,000 with an alternative of three weeks in jail. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
He was further charged with driving without the necessary insurance and was discharged on that matter.
However, on Tuesday shortly after leaving the court and although being disqualified from driving, Campbell was seen driving the said motor car PRR 654 on the Canefield Public Road and he still did not have the necessary insurance .He was stopped and told of the offences and charged.
He appeared before the said Magistrate on Wednesday in the Reliance Magistrate’s court and pleaded not guilty and was placed on $10,000 bail. He will have to return to court on July 10.
The next charge on the said date and place, he drove the said motor car although he was disqualified from and obtaining a Driver’s licence. He pleaded guilty and was fined $25,000 or spend six months in jail.
The defendant in his defence told the court that he had no one to take the car home after his previous conviction. So he drove it himself.
He has since been removed from the Police Traffic Department.
